Freedom of the press

Posted

Dear Editor,

Back in 1964, I was stationed in Germany for two years in the U.S. Army. My two-year assignment did not qualify me for on-post family quarters, so I rented an apartment from a German family on Main Street in Baumholder, before my wife joined me. The German man I rented from told me he was a German soldier in WWII, was captured, and sent to Texas to load C-rations onto ships as a POW. He told me he was on the wrong side, but didn’t know it. All news and press was controlled by Hitler and his government. He indicated that if the German people had known the truth, WWII may not have happened. I have never forgotten what he said.

Why is this important? Right now in this country we have an effort by the party in power to control what info gets out to the people. A recent survey by an independent agency said 100% of the news about Biden and Kamala is positive and 93% of the news about Trump is negative on the ABC news network. Yes, freedom of the press is important for our freedom.

The people who want to sensor speech are never the good guys.
