Linn Fire Chief proud of departments’ actions during Hilke’s Ice fire

LINN — At last Thursday’s board meeting, Linn Fire Protection District Chief Ron Hoffman said he was proud of the local fire departments and how well everyone worked together during the fire at Hilke’s Ice in Freeburg the previous Wednesday.

“Our local departments, our county, I couldn’t be any more proud of them. And, you know, we are part of them,” Hoffman said. ‘Everybody did what they’ve been trained to do. I think that aerial did really good. It pumped for 15 and a half hours. And we were, I mean, no cobwebs left. And the little tanker, it (ran) 25 loads.”

Hoffman also reported that the little trailer is almost ready to sell, as well as a Blue Bird bus they were given for training.

All fire engines have been tested.

The fire protection district received a thank-you letter for their help with and $100 sponsorship of the 2024 Bringing Hope 5K run, to aid against human trafficking.

It was also noted that, when firefighters went to get the rescue truck, someone from out of town had parked in front of the bay. Crews were forced to remove the necessary equipment and supplies from the rescue and take another truck. The illegally parked vehicle was towed.

Hoffman agreed to take the department’s smoke trailer to Chamois Elementary in early October to help provide fire safety training to students.

Board member Dee Bequette asked if Station 2 is designated as a storm shelter. Hoffman replied that it is not. Bequette asked Hoffman to look in to fixing the ladies room toilet at Station 2, so the water does not have to be turned back on for each use, then shut off again after use.  Hoffman said he will look in to it, but the water to the entire building is shut off when not in use, in case of leaks. Board President Scott Herndon asked Hoffman to look at a leaking urinal at Station 2 as well.

The board voted to have Osage Accounting conduct a non-CPA audit of their books. Linn Fire Protection District is not required to do an audit, but they have one done one every few years as a good business practice.

Bills were approved in the amount of $5,537.02.
