Respect your neighbors’ property

Stealing or breaking political signs has become a common problem during election time. This childish behavior goes against the basic ideas of our democracy.

Our country was built on the freedom to speak our minds openly. Political yard signs are one way people show their beliefs and support for candidates. Taking or damaging these signs doesn’t just break the law - it tries to quiet those with different views.

As adults in a democracy, we need to set a good example, even when we strongly disagree about politics. Just because we have different opinions doesn’t mean it’s okay to act like kids and mess with our neighbors’ stuff.

There are many democrats in Gasconade County fearful to even say how they feel because of fear for their personal safety and possessions. Many have tried to display their views about this election, just as their republican neighbors do, only to have their property destroyed the next day.

It’s time we come together around the values we share as Americans. One of the most important is the right of everyone to speak their mind without fear or having their Harris yard sign stolen.

This election season, I’m asking everyone in our community to act like responsible adults. Respect your neighbors’ property and their right to express themselves, no matter what party they support. Our ability to disagree peacefully is what really makes America great.
